Texas Holdem Poker – An Introduction to THP

Posted on July 25th, 2010 in Texas Holdem Poker by anthonyarce  Tagged , , ,

So you’re new to Texas Holdem poker? Not a problem. Texas Holdem poker is by far the best game for a beginner to learn. Other poker games like Omaha or 7 card stud need a higher understanding of  calculating odds and card counting. Texas Holdem can be learned in a few minutes and you can be playing fairly well with a few hours of practice. However, in order to learn the game you must play and you must play fairly often.

Online poker rooms offer a wide variety of play money tables where beginners may practice for free until they are ready to move up to the fun at real money tables. We recommend playing online to start because online poker rooms handle many tedious details, like dealing, shuffling, and determining who has the best hand.

A Texas Hold’em poker game goes as follows:

  1. Depending on the limit and betting structure, players will place out blinds and antes so there is an initial amount to get things started. This is called posting.
  2. The dealer shuffles up a standard deck of 52 playing cards.
  3. Each player is dealt two private cards face down. These are called your hole cards or pocket cards.
  4. Then there is a round of betting starting with the player to the left of the blinds. This is the preflop betting round. Like most games of poker, players can call, raise, or fold.
  5. After the betting round ends, the dealer discards the top card of the deck. This is called a burn card. This is done to prevent cheating.
  6. The dealer then flips the next three cards face up on the table. This is called the flop. These are communal cards that anyone can use in combination with their two pocket cards to form a poker hand.
  7. The player to the left of the dealer starts another betting round.
  8. After the betting concludes, the dealer burns again then flips another communal card onto the table. This is called the turn.
  9. The player to the left of the dealer begins another round of betting. In many types of games, this is where the bet size doubles.
  10. Again, the dealer burns a card and places a final card face up on the table. This is called the river. Players can now use any of the five cards on the table or the two cards in their pocket to form a five card poker hand.
  11. There is one final round of betting starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
  12. After that, we have the showdown. All of the players who haven’t folded reveal their hands. This begins with the player to the left of the last player to call. Players use a combination of their pocket cards and the community cards to form a five card poker hand.
  13. The player who shows the best hand wins! Although sometimes players with the same hand split the pot.

Once you understand the game’s basic structure, you can play Texas hold ‘em and even some of its variants.  Texas Holdem is an easy game to learn, just difficult to master. The “mastering” part is the costly part, requiring study,  practice and some liquor.

Check out FullTilt to get a feel for the action. They have free money tables, and you can start playing for real money as soon as you feel ready. They have both low limits for newer players as well as high stakes tables.

Poker Lessons – 01: The Very Basics

Posted on July 17th, 2010 in Poker Lessons by anthonyarce  Tagged ,

How to Study?

Playing poker can seem like traveling to a different country. First of all it has its own language. A player who doesn’t have a grasp of the terminology may as well just save time and hand their wallet to the dealer. Poker also has it’s own set of rules that govern what happens on the table. Within those rules are subtleties and variations that could reduce the uninformed player in tears.

If a new player is immersed in this culture long enough, they will eventually pick up on all the rules and terminology. This may take a while though and the sharp learning curve may result in maxed out credit cards and the occasional bankruptcy. LaunchPoker.com has provided a way to help the new player learn the poker terrain without all that mucking about with trial and error.

Before starting you may want to read the rules and study the hand ranking. This will provide a base in the basics for the newbie. If you have any questions you can use this link  poker rules.

Hope you enjoyed this weeks post and now to the video have fun and GO PLAY POKER!

Poker Games For Fun – 7 Card Stud

Posted on July 4th, 2010 in Poker Games For Fun by anthonyarce  Tagged , , ,

Summary. 7 card stud where the lowest hand showing gets to choose their card from several face up cards.

7-card-stud table

After a round of betting, one card is dealt face up in the middle for every player. So if five people are playing, five cards are dealt face up. The player who has the lowest hand showing gets to pick which card they want. Hands are ranked as in low ball with ties going to the player closest to the dealer’s left. After that, the next lowest hand chooses, and so on, until the highest hand takes the last card. Another round of betting is followed by another round of face up cards, with the lowest hand again choosing first. Players bet and there is a final round of face up cards that players choose from. After betting, everyone is dealt one more card face down (for a total of seven) followed by a final round of betting and showdown. The player with the best five card hand takes the pot.

poker strategy

Strategy. Strategy can be interesting, because it is often in a player’s best interest to choose a low card that will allow them to choose early in the next round. Matching one of your down cards often works well because you don’t have a pair showing, which would cause you to choose later in the next round. Straights and flushes can be chosen without your up cards beating other’s up cards. Of course, your selection may also be influenced by trying to prevent the next player from getting the card they want.
Variant
5 Card Stud. Players are dealt one card down and one card up. After betting, one card is dealt face up in the middle for each player, with the lowest hands choosing first as above. Players bet and choose twice more, for a total of five cards. Showdown follows the final round of betting.
